Project Brief
This project focuses on the design and batch production of a task lamp, giving students hands-on experience in the product development cycle from concept to manufacturing. The project is structured into three phases: Design, Development, and Manufacture.

Clamp Development

Through several iterations, using laser cut MDF and discarded materials, the group developed a clamp concept. The goal was to design a clamp system that was sturdy and adjustable while requiring minimal 'fiddling' to secure the lamp. For it to be a successful clamp, it would also have to fit a range of desk thicknesses. Eventually we reached a solution that used a weight activated clamp with swivelling feet, allowing the weight to pull the bottom foot up securely into position. The weight is swinging to ensure it is always pulling directly downwards no matter the thickness of desk.
Springs, different weights and static vs non static structures were all tested. The most effective solution was swivelling feet on a static frame, to ensure they always sat flat, no matter the thickness of desk. The weight is also free to swing so that it always acts directly to the floor, and keeps a low profile.
